How do I install a door stop?

Doorstops are indispensable accessories for protecting walls and doors from impact. Over the years, doorstops have become a veritable decorative element, adding the finishing touch to your home. They are available in different models, materials and finishes to suit all needs and styles of decoration.

In this article, we explain how to install a door stop, step by step. We'll also give you tips on how to choose the right doorstop for you, and how to install it optimally.

How to choose a door stop?

There are many models of doorstops on the market. Before choosing, it's important to consider the following criteria:

  • The type of stop: there are two main types of door stop: wall-mounted and floor-mounted.
  • The material: Most of the time, we find metal doorstops (brass, iron, zamak) and sometimes even wooden doorstops.
  • The finish: doorstops are available in a wide range of finishes, such as black, gold, matte or shiny chrome. There's no reason why your doorstop can't match your world.
  • Size: it's important to choose a doorstop that's the right size for your door, so that it fulfills its functional role (blocking the door to prevent the lever handle from banging against the wall when opening).

Installing a floor stop

Floor-mounted stops are very common in interiors. They are available in various sizes/heights and finishes.

Prior to installation, you'll need to pre-define its location. We recommend that you install it so that the door can open fully without damaging the adjacent wall. To this end, you can simulate the location before deciding on the ideal spot.

Once the location has been determined, you can mark the ground with a pencil to facilitate drilling.

If you have underfloor heating, we recommend that you check that
the chosen location does not present a drilling hazard for the pipes.

in your floor. If in doubt, do not drill and opt for a wall-mounted
stop, otherwise you risk irreparably damaging your underfloor heating system.

Materials required for installation

  • A floor stop to fix
  • A drill
  • Suitable dowels if not supplied with your stop
  • A pencil

Instructions

  • Mark the location of the stop on the floor
  • Drill a hole where marked
  • Insert a dowel into the drilled hole
  • Fix the stop in the dowel

Installing a wall stop

Wall-mounted door stops are just as common as floor-mounted door stops. They are easy to install and can be fixed to any wall, whatever its material, provided you have the right hardware.

For the wall-mounted doorstop, you'll need to be careful about the length of the stop. For example, if the depth of your door handle is 5 cm, you'll need a wall-mounted door stop with a height of 6 cm. The aim is to prevent the door handle from touching the wall when the door is opened.

We recommend that you measure the depth of your handle before purchasing, or ask us to help you make the ideal choice.

Materials required

  • A wall stop
  • A drill
  • Anchors to match your wall material
  • A pencil

Here's how to install it:

  • Mark the location of the stop on the wall
  • Drill a hole where marked
  • Insert a dowel into the hole
  • Screw the stop into the dowel

Installing a self-adhesive floor stop

Over the past few years, self-adhesive doorstops have become increasingly popular. They offer a quick and easy solution for protecting walls, and are available in a range of sizes and finishes.

For a long-lasting solution, we recommend you opt for traditionally fixed door stops. However, this solution can help you when you don't dare to install a stop yourself and/or you're faced with a door with limited daily use.

As with the other stops, you'll need to predefine their location before installation.

We advise you to install it in such a way that the door only opens fully, while preventing the handle from banging against the wall.

Materials required

  • A self-adhesive floor stop
  • A clean cloth

Installation instructions

  • Clean the floor surface where the stop is to be installed.
  • Remove the protective film from the stop.
  • Apply the stop to the floor.

Doorstops: a real decorative element

Doorstops are a decorative element in their own right. They can be used to add a touch of style to your interior, or to harmonize it.

  • For a modern look, opt for a metal or brass stop in black or white.
  • For a classic look, opt for a brushed brass stop
  • For a retro look, opt for a brass or copper stop.

  • If you're installing a floor-mounted stop, take care with underfloor heating.
