How to choose and install a furniture handle?

To choose the ideal furniture handle, it's important to consider several factors, such as the style of the room, the handle material and its location. Furniture handles are an essential part of your decor, enabling you to open and close your wardrobes, cupboards, chests of drawers or dressing rooms.

Various styles of furniture handles

In the world of furniture handles, there are dozens of different styles to enhance your interior design. It's very important to take into account the style of your room and your furniture when choosing your furniture handle.

For example, for a contemporary-style kitchen or bathroom furniture handle, La Quincaillerie advises you to opt for a minimalist, sleek furniture handle in stainless steel or chrome finish. This way, your choice will be in keeping with your decorative universe.

For a more enveloping world, our selection of wooden furniture handles or our range of black furniture handles will be very useful in meeting your expectations.

Recently, furniture handles in natural stone (jasper, labradorite, marble...) have also become popular for decoration. These furniture handles will add cachet to your furniture thanks to their mineral appearance.

Furniture materials and handles

The material of a furniture handle is also a factor to consider when choosing your furniture handle. Frequency of use and furniture location are also factors that can influence your choice of furniture handle.

For a kitchen or dressing room, you can opt for furniture handles in brass, zamak or wood. These furniture handles are sturdy and resistant to everyday shocks. La Quincaillerie has selected a wide range of dressing room cabinet handles and a selection of kitchen cabinet handles. These product selections ensure a flawless choice perfectly suited to the intended use.

In a bathroom, we suggest using materials such as brass or stainless steel. These materials are your perfect ally against corrosion due to the humidity in the air. You'll find all our bathroom furniture handles in our selection.

The impact of furniture handle size

Two options are available:

  • The front of the cabinet you want to fit is already drilled. To avoid any aesthetic problems, you'll need to choose a handle with the same centre-to-centre distance as the previous one. To this end, you can measure the space between the two holes already present on your furniture and choose a handle with the same technical characteristics. If in doubt, you can dismantle your furniture handle and bring it to our showroom. We'll know which models to choose, so you don't have to re-drill or change your fronts.
  • The front of the cabinet you want to fit has not yet been drilled: you can then choose the cabinet handle you need (size and center-to-center distance) without any constraints.

Don't worry, drilling the holes required to secure the chosen handles is easily done with a drill and a bit suitable for the material.

However, the size of your furniture handle can also have an impact on your daily life. We recommend that you choose a furniture handle with a very good grip, especially for built-in fridges or dishwashers.

Why do you want to do this? You're going to be opening and closing these doors very frequently. What's more, your dishwasher or fridge has a magnetic closing system that blocks accidental opening. So you're bound to have to exert more force to open these doors.

We therefore recommend that you select easy-to-use handles with a good grip. Conversely, we don't recommend small knobs that can be grasped with just 2 fingers, for example.

Our tips for installing a furniture handle

Once you've chosen your furniture handle, it's time to move on to the installation stage. You're perfectly free to do this on your own, or get help if you prefer.

If your door is not yet drilled :

You must first mark the location where you are going to drill in order to pass the fixing screw.

Select the right drill bit for the material to be drilled and the size of the fixing screw.

If your door is already drilled :

All you have to do is place your furniture handle on the outside of the door and insert the fixing screw. Simply screw in with a screwdriver to secure the handle. The force exerted will be sufficient.

Don't worry about the screws: we supply the right ones with each product (screws for furniture knobs and handles, special screws for products requiring special fastenings, stoppers where necessary...).
